Lincoln Park Apartment’s current building started out as a high school structure, built in 1926. Located on the corner of North and School Street, it became known as the West School Building. In 1929, a gym was added; and in 1969, another high school building was built. The building then became Lincoln Elementary, which was used until the late 1980’s. The structure now graces downtown as a landmark and our current apartment building.
Named after Lee O. Harris, Harris Elementary school was constructed in 1953. Lee became the town’s most prominent teacher—he even had James Whitcomb Riley as one of his students. Active in organizing and seeing the construction of other school buildings, he added the current building to the National Register of Historical Places in 2009.
